Three-quarters of one of France’s Alpine regions supports the bid, according to a recent poll

French regions are showing overwhelming support for France’s bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics, with 75% of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and 62% of the Hautes-Alpes region in favor of hosting the Games, according to a poll conducted by the French Institute of Public Opinion in October. The bid, however, has faced criticism from opponents who claim the poll results are flawed.

France is a relatively late entry into the bid for the next Winter Games, joining Sweden, Switzerland, and Salt Lake City as candidates. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recently voted to allow the simultaneous awarding of the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games. The IOC leaders will decide in the coming weeks which bids will advance to contract negotiations and the final vote by the full membership will take place in 2024.

However, there’s no guarantee that the sites for both the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games will be named together. This leaves Salt Lake City as an option if all three of the 2030 candidates fall through. Utah leaders, including Governor Spencer Cox, remain enthusiastic about the possibility of hosting another Olympics in Salt Lake City, which hosted the 2002 Winter Games.

French bid officials celebrated the results of their polling, while opponents claimed the poll question was worded in a way that skewed the results. A group opposed to the bid called “No JO” demanded a referendum on the bid. Although there have been concerns that Utahns may grow tired of the bid process, support in the state for another Olympics remains strong, with over 80% in favor according to a Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll.

The bid for the Winter Games in Switzerland and Sweden has also received significant support in those countries, with 67% in Switzerland and up to 70% in Sweden backing the bids. This shows that the Winter Games continue to capture the imagination and support of people in various regions around the world.

Overall, the strong backing from French regions and the enthusiastic support in Salt Lake City and other candidate cities indicate that the competition for the 2030 Winter Olympics is heating up. Time will tell which city will ultimately win the honor of hosting this prestigious international event.
